Place sugar, bitters, orange and maraschino cherry in Old Fashioned glass. Muddle ingredients until juices are released. Add bourbon, water and ice then stir.
Old Fashioned recipes change from one location to another and from one bar to another. Our recipe features the added sweetness of the muddled maraschino cherry and orange slice.
Just about anything and everything in an Old Fashioned is substituted in different recipes. Some like the Old Fashioned with a little fizz and will substitute the water with 7-UP or ginger ale. The bourbon is often substituted with other whiskeys or even brandy (the latter being called a Brandy Old Fashioned). Many recipes don't even call for the maraschino cherry or the orange to be muddled (but for reasons that should be obvious, we don't condone those recipes).
